If you have time for one safari, which park should it be? Both are excellent, and they offer quite different experiences.
Yala National Park
Yala has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, plus elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and a wide variety of birds. It is also the most popular park, so the busiest tracks can feel crowded. The first drive of the day is usually the quietest and the best for big cats. The park usually closes for part of September and October.
Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe’s open grassland makes it easy to spot elephants, and herds with calves are common. Sightings are almost guaranteed, and it is less crowded than Yala. It is a great choice for families and for anyone who wants reliable wildlife without long waits.
Our advice
- Want leopards and do not mind a pre-dawn start? Choose Yala.
- Want elephants, photographs and a relaxed morning? Choose Udawalawe.
- Have time for both? Do Udawalawe on the way from Ella to the coast, and Yala on a separate morning.
Tips for any safari
- Book a morning drive: animals are most active and temperatures are cooler.
- Wear neutral colours and bring a hat, sunscreen and binoculars.
- Choose a jeep driver who respects park rules and keeps a calm distance from animals.
