Sigiriya’s fortress is the symbol of Sri Lanka’s ancient kingdoms, but the neighbouring Pidurangala rock offers the best view of it. Many visitors now do both, on different mornings.
Sigiriya Rock
A climb of well over a thousand steps takes you past ancient frescoes, the Mirror Wall and the lion’s paws to a summit with the ruins of a royal palace. The tickets cost more than most sights in Sri Lanka, but you also get the water gardens, museum and a rich piece of history. Go early, as the stairs get hot and crowded by mid-morning.
Pidurangala Rock
A shorter, rougher climb that ends with a short scramble over boulders. The reward is a view of Sigiriya rising from the jungle, especially beautiful at sunrise. It is much cheaper, and you will need sturdy shoes and, for the temple at the base, covered shoulders and knees.
Which one is right for you?
- Short on time: Sigiriya Rock, for the history and the full site.
- Love views and photos: Pidurangala at sunrise.
- Have two mornings: Pidurangala for sunrise, then Sigiriya later the same day or the next morning.
Our guides know the quietest times to climb and can combine either rock with a village tour, Dambulla cave temples or an afternoon safari at Minneriya.
